Welcome
Welcome to Tides of War! Tides of War (usually abbreviated ToW) is a storyline-based, highly customizable, player-oriented simulation. ToW is set in a far-away galaxy where alien races thrive and conflict is common. Each player creates their own unique race upon applying for membership in ToW, including a history, culture, in-game attributes, and even technology. Attributes help players to define their race's disposition towards others and their outlook on the galaxy as well as providing special bonuses other players will not have. Technology is also another way to set your race apart. Technology is not limited to a set tech-tree like some computer games, but is completely free-form, limiting players only by their imaginations. Also customizable are the starships your race uses to explore (or conquer) the galaxy and the military bases with which you defend yourself.
Joining
If you are interested in joining the ToW universe, you must submit a race application as detailed in the towracegeneration.doc file, and additional information regarding starting a new empire can be found in towstartingresources.doc and towstartingtech.doc.
Tides of War is a complex game which takes some time to learn. The rules can be very intimidating, especially to anyone who has not played a message board based simulation before. Instead of jumping in right away with your own empire, you can join another player in his or her quest for galactic dominance. Along the way, they will help you learn and work through the rules.
This process is very simple. If you would like to join under another player's command, you do not need to submit a race application. You first, however, need to obtain that player's and the Game Master's permission. That player will then help you learn the rules of the universe by giving you practical, in-character assignments of their choosing to complete. In time you will learn the rules and of the game and have fun doing it.
Players may work for another player as long as they like. However, if the empire-building bug has bit you, then you have two options. First, you may create an entirely new empire using what you have learned under the other player. Or, with that player's and the Game Master's consent, you may make a breakaway faction of the empire you have been playing under.
To get more information or apply for membership, email the Head Game Master at empireprince@aol.com. Also, other players are knowledgeable and friendly and would love to talk. Their contact information can be found in their profiles here at Tides of War.
